What is Wellcomm?

WellComm helps identify children who may have speech and language development issues early on, making sure they get the support they need when it matters most. Early detection is crucial, as children often mask their difficulties, particularly in KS2. Language barriers are often hidden, 2-3 children in every classroom face significant Speech, Language and Communication needs with many more children potentially underdiagnosed and unsupported. Early identification ensures children get the help they need, boosting their confidence and helping them thrive.

At AFFNS, we used the assessment tool WellComm to identify children’s starting points with their communication and speech and language. This assessment data helps us to put targeted support in place for children and allows us to track their progress over time. Each term we assess where children are at according to the Wellcomm assessment tools which are in age brackets and stages. We will then report to parents at our termly parents evenings, or more frequently as part of the Assess, Plan, Do and Review cycle for pupils with SEND, to allow parents to support their child at home with printable resources. In the classroom, your child’s key person will then work on specific targets to support their language development and understanding which are done through targeted support in the provision.
